“Silent” *Illustration Friday*

Hello everyone, it’s that time for Illustration Friday again!  I managed to pull of this quick little diddy.

Here is a ninja…yeah a real one.  Every one thousand years or a so a true “ninja” is born.  The moon has to be just right and there is squirel blood involved and a bunch of other junk.  I could go into it but, believe me, it is not interesting AT ALL!  Anyhow Larry (yah I know laugh it up, but for reals thats his name) is a professional ninja.  He fights crime and kills “bad” ninja dudes, but on this fateful night, he was not so lucky.  You see he was breaking into a evil masterminds exotic vase shop, where  he “triggered the highly sophisiticated alarm system” (his word not mine).  Needless to say Larry has retired, because its kinda hard to be a ninja with rabies!

“Scary” *Illustration Friday*

Just under the wire!  I was able to do an “Illustration Friday” this week!

I watched a few scary movies this week to get in the mood for all hallows eve and I found out something.  I really enjoy horror movies of old (The Thing, Lost Boys)!  The new ones show to much and it all CG…boo!  Anyhow this idea came to me pretty quickly, got the idea while watching these movies with my lady friend.  She was so scared the whole time and one of the movies we watched during the day!  So I thought to myself, I wish I was scared of movies like this.  Now for those of you who don’t know me, I’m a beast of a man…greenish back hair, ears that look like horns but NOT a tail, what are you CRAZY?  As a matter of fact you could say the monster above is a very close likeness to what I really look like.  Yeah, I bet you thought the image above was a picture…it’s not…its a drawing.  Boo!

C&C’s welcome,
Ry

Potato Potato Podcast is the lovechild of two guys who have known each other for over 20 years. Ryan and Kurt discuss childhood memories, adulthood memories or just wax philosophical on trivial things. Each week, their musical theater and improv (UCB Theater, Groundlings) backgrounds come to the forefront as they sing and improvise more than any other podcast would ever feel comfortable doing. So, if you’re ready to hear two guys trying their hardest to one-up the other one for an hour, then listen to Potato Potato Podcast.

PX3 Webisode Backgrounds

So I created a short webisode animation for a podcast I do every week called The Potato Potato Podcast.  I just wanted to post some of the production backgrounds.  I’m quiet fond of them, so I figured I would post them.

All created in Photoshop.  This style is a little different then I normally do so it was fun to try to have them all have the same look and feel.

“Mesmerizing” *Illustration Friday*

Sep 20, 2011 by     3 Comments    Posted under: Artwork

Here we are, another Illustration Friday, and this week the word is “Mesmerizing”.  I knew I wanted a kid sitting down just staring at something.  So at first I had him looking at a ball.  Yeah a ball. I mean, what is more mesmerizing to a kid then a ball right?!  Maybe it was a feral child, or some kid how just really likes balls.  I knew this whole “ball” thing wasn’t going to cut it.  I couldn’t think of a single thing.  So I hit the road!  I went on a small 5 1/2 month hike through the wilderness of South America, then rode a bike to Australia.  I found my peace while meditating in a mens room at Target™.  “A CANDLE!” I yelled at the top of my lungs as I ran home to draw the candle in the kids hand!  Pretty sweet story huh?  (oh yeah and a monster is going to grab him and probably eat him.)

This method of painting in Photoshop like this is new to me.  I like the effect.  But I do know that I still need some practice with this technique.

“Disguise” *Illustration Friday*

Sep 1, 2011 by     No Comments    Posted under: Artwork, Illustration Friday

Hello everyone I’m back with a quick one for this weeks Illustration Friday.  There is no real story behind this, other then the fact I thought it would be silly to see comic book super heroes wearing very cheesy and typical disguises.  When going over all the comic book heroes I realized that so many (if not all) of them have secret identities.  I mean you would think there would be one big comic book super hero out there that is just “super” all the time.  No need to hide, he just sits in his “super” couch watching “super” TV, eating “super” Hot Pocket™.  Wait a minute… I think I’m on to something.  Ignore everything I just wrote (my delete key is broken).

“Perennial” *Illustration Friday*

So here is my entry into Illustration Friday.  It is all digital and i am still experimenting with this whole digital painting thing and sometimes I love it and others i want to throw my computer out the window…

Anyhow the word is “perennial” so instead of drawing a flower (since that was I could think of).  I did something that is also “perennial” and that’s…TREES!!! Yes trees!  Well maybe not just trees, there is also love and all that other mushy crap!  I mean love and stuff is pretty cool…it last all year, makes you sick sometimes and it has nice hair!  Well 2 out of 3 aint bad!

C & C’s welcome!

“Midsummer Night” *Illustration Friday*

Jun 29, 2011 by     1 Comment     Posted under: Artwork, Illustration Friday

Here is yet another entry for Illustration Friday.  While cleaning out my garage I found all my oil paints I used to use when I did Plein Air painting.  And I couldn’t resist giving oil painting another try.  So I busted out some random piece of wood I found in the garage and went for it!  I had a great time doing the sky, but when it came to the details I struggled controlling the media.  I got the idea from looking up “midsummer night” on Google and this image of a long exposure someone took of a night sky came up.  You could see the movement of all the stars.  It’s a pretty rad picture!  Anyhow I love flying kites (especially at the beach during the summer) so I kinda put the two together and came up with this one.  Let me tell you guys something, flying stunt kits is the ONLY way to go…none of that single string crap.  Trust me, go out and get a stunt kite. (this blog post was brought to you by Stuntkites.com) Crits welcome.

*once again this is a crappy capture of the final..I took it with my camera phone since the piece will probably remain wet for weeks.  I couldn’t scan it.

“Launch” *Illustration Friday *

Jun 22, 2011 by     3 Comments    Posted under: Artwork, Illustration Friday

I actually made the deadline for this weeks Illustration Friday!  The word this week was “Launch”.  I figured I’d practice my Cintiq™ coloring skills and boy has it been rough.  I already miss using real media!  I guess it will just take a little practice before I feel more comfortable.  The color options digitally are almost too vast and really make it hard to make a piece feel cohesive when it come to color pallet.  Anyhow, the idea came to me when I remembered that when I was I kid,  I made so many things form cardboard.  I used to sneak out and rummage through the Radio Shack® dumpsters like some deranged, extremely picky, homeless, chubby Mexican kid and find boxes that weren’t covered in soda or any other disgusting substance.  Drag it home (my mom never complained) and start building things right there in the living room.  One time I made a house, INSIDE MY HOUSE…complete with air conditioning!  Man sometime I really miss those days.  Well enjoy!  C and C’s welcome!

“Safari” *Illustration Friday *

I missed the deadline on this one but I like the illustration so much i had to finish it.  Not much to say about it, except that no animals were harmed in the the making of this piece.  Well except for the red hue I used…that was Bald Eagle blood.  Oh and the green hue was the result of me squeezing a baby Kimono Dragon till it popped.  Other then that no ani…and the orange hue was the ground up Panda kidneys.  Whew I feel so much better getting that out in the open.  Enjoy!
